Domino Effect of Risk Exploring Cascading Threats Across Interconnected Business Systems

Risk becomes far more consequential when a disruption is able to travel, interact, and multiply across the systems that support modern business. This article examines the cascading nature of contemporary threats by exploring how failures originating in suppliers, infrastructure, digital platforms, logistics networks, and other critical nodes can propagate through interconnected organisational relationships and generate second and third order consequences. The analysis shows that systemic vulnerability is shaped not only by the severity of the initiating event, but also by hidden dependencies, structural concentration, behavioural responses, digital interdependence, information asymmetry, and the way recovery actions redistribute pressure across the network. Particular attention is given to the limitations of conventional risk registers that isolate individual threats while overlooking the pathways through which disruption can spread. The article therefore advances a broader interpretation of resilience based on dependency intelligence, selective structural redundancy, coordinated response mechanisms, digital continuity, and intelligent system reconfiguration. Strategic recommendations further emphasise dynamic network mapping, redesign of critical connections, cross organisational response protocols, cyber physical risk governance, and systemic recovery quality as essential mechanisms for containing cascading threats before they develop into wider instability. The central argument is that resilience should no longer be judged solely by an organisation’s ability to survive the first disruption, but by its capacity to prevent that disruption from becoming the trigger for subsequent failures across the wider business system.
