Abstract

The modernization of halal supply chains has become increasingly important as organisations seek to strengthen ethical integrity, improve transparency, enhance operational resilience, and sustain competitive advantage in global markets. This article examines how halal supply chain modernization is shaped by institutional standards, digital technologies, organisational capabilities, consumer expectations, and sustainability pressures. The analysis identifies several persistent barriers, including fragmented certification systems, technological and infrastructural limitations, insufficient organisational readiness, human resource constraints, consumer skepticism, and growing environmental demands. These challenges demonstrate that modernization cannot be achieved through technology adoption alone, but requires coordinated improvements in governance, capability development, traceability, and stakeholder collaboration. The article further highlights the strategic role of digital traceability, harmonised certification, leadership commitment, consumer-oriented transparency, and sustainable logistics practices in strengthening halal assurance and market credibility. Based on the analysis, modernization is positioned as an integrated strategic process that connects ethical compliance, technological capability, operational performance, and competitive positioning. The article contributes to halal supply chain management by demonstrating that long-term competitiveness depends on the ability of organisations to modernise without weakening halal integrity, consumer trust, or ethical responsibility. Effective modernization therefore requires a balanced approach that combines institutional harmonisation, digital innovation, organisational capability, sustainability, and transparent governance across the halal supply chain.
