Abstract

The relentless pursuit of convenience is reshaping logistics into an increasingly demanding system in which faster fulfilment generates benefits for customers while simultaneously creating substantial economic, operational, technological, environmental, and social pressures. Growing expectations for rapid delivery, flexible service, real time visibility, and effortless returns have compressed fulfilment windows and intensified the resources required across warehousing, transportation, last mile distribution, and reverse logistics. A critical examination of these developments reveals five interconnected challenges involving deteriorating fulfilment economics, volatile capacity requirements, increasing technological dependence, expanding reverse logistics activity, and environmental pressures associated with fragmented urban delivery. The analysis challenges the assumption that maximum delivery speed should remain a universal indicator of logistics excellence and instead advances a differentiated approach to fulfilment based on customer value, urgency, transaction economics, geographic conditions, and resource productivity. Strategic priorities include value based service segmentation, adaptive capacity management, productivity oriented digital investment, integrated forward and reverse logistics, and fulfilment decisions based on total system value. Greater use of parcel lockers, collection points, flexible capacity, intelligent routing, automation, and alternative delivery configurations can preserve convenience without requiring every transaction to consume the resources associated with maximum responsiveness. Ultimately, sustainable logistics performance depends not on continuously reducing delivery time, but on achieving economically intelligent responsiveness in which the value created through convenience remains proportionate to the financial, operational, human, and environmental resources required to deliver it.
