Rising Cost of Carbon and Its Growing Impact on Supply Chain Decisions

Rising carbon costs are becoming an important strategic concern for supply chains as environmental regulation, energy transition, market expectations, and decarbonisation pressures increasingly influence business decisions. This conceptual study examines how carbon-related costs are reshaping supply chain strategy across sourcing, procurement, transportation, production, supplier relationships, technology investment, and network configuration. The analysis shows that carbon exposure can no longer be treated as a separate environmental consideration because it increasingly affects operating costs, supplier competitiveness, logistics choices, investment priorities, and long-term business resilience. Traditional decision models that focus primarily on price, quality, speed, and service may therefore provide an incomplete basis for evaluating future supply chain alternatives. Greater attention is required to the financial implications associated with carbon-intensive activities, regulatory uncertainty, transition investments, supplier capability, and changing logistics structures. The study further proposes that organisations strengthen carbon-related decision capability through integrated cost assessment, improved data transparency, supplier development, coordinated logistics planning, cleaner technology investment, and stronger cross-functional governance. The contribution lies in reframing carbon cost as a strategic supply chain variable rather than a narrow environmental compliance issue. Firms that incorporate carbon considerations into mainstream operational and investment decisions are more likely to strengthen competitiveness, adaptability, resilience, and long-term supply chain performance.
