Abstract

Global supply chains are undergoing a structural reconfiguration as geopolitical fragmentation, technological change, industrial policy, and recurring disruptions challenge production networks traditionally designed around cost efficiency and global specialisation. This conceptual article examines how supply chain rewiring is reshaping the geography of global business through friendshoring, reshoring, regionalisation, supplier diversification, and selective localisation. The analysis shows that these strategies do not represent a uniform retreat from globalisation. Instead, international production is evolving towards more selective and geographically distributed networks in which firms must balance efficiency, resilience, political exposure, technological capability, and access to specialised suppliers. Diversification can strengthen resilience, but its effectiveness depends on whether alternative locations provide genuinely independent production capacity rather than reproducing common upstream vulnerabilities. Technology further changes production geography by enabling greater coordination across dispersed networks while automation can improve the economic feasibility of relocating selected activities. The article proposes a strategic approach centred on selective diversification, regional production portfolios, digital intelligence, capability-based industrial development, and continuous network recalibration. Rather than replacing global integration with economic isolation, effective supply chain rewiring requires organisations to preserve valuable international capabilities while reducing critical dependencies and developing credible alternatives. This perspective positions supply chain geography as a dynamic strategic capability through which firms can strengthen resilience, maintain competitiveness, and adapt systematically to an increasingly fragmented global business environment.
