Abstract

Artificial intelligence and workplace automation are reshaping graduate employability by changing task structures, skill requirements, recruitment signals, and the developmental pathways through which early-career professionals acquire competence. This conceptual article examines how higher education can prepare graduates for labour markets in which AI is embedded in routine professional work. The analysis integrates graduate employability theory with research on AI literacy, career adaptability, human-machine complementarity, work design, digital capability, and university-industry alignment. Five foundations of future employability are developed, followed by five pressures that weaken the education-to-work transition: curriculum lag, unequal AI capability, automation of entry-level tasks, overdependence that weakens judgement, and fragmented employer-university signalling. The article then explains the mechanisms linking technological change to employability and proposes five institutional pathways centred on cross-disciplinary AI literacy, adaptive career capability, human-AI assessment, employer co-creation, and inclusive ethical employability ecosystems. The central insight is that employability cannot be secured through tool proficiency alone. Graduates require renewable capability that combines disciplinary expertise, responsible AI use, communication, professional judgement, learning agility, and credible workplace evidence. The framework contributes an integrated basis for curriculum, assessment, career development, employer partnership, and policy responses to AI-mediated labour-market change.
