Abstract

Escalating educational pressure is reshaping the conditions under which university students are expected to learn, perform and remain psychologically well. This conceptual article examines academic resilience as a dynamic educational capacity that can protect student well-being without normalising excessive workload or transferring responsibility for structural pressure onto individuals. Drawing on contemporary higher education research and related scholarship on adaptive capacity, digital participation, ethical leadership and human-centred systems, the analysis integrates study demands, self-efficacy, engagement, belonging, career uncertainty and institutional support. The synthesis shows that resilience is strengthened when students can mobilise personal and relational resources within environments that provide manageable challenge, timely feedback, recovery opportunities, psychological safety and equitable access to assistance. It also identifies workload concentration, digital boundary erosion, unequal resource access, achievement anxiety and fragmented support as conditions that can deplete adaptive capacity. The article proposes five strategic pathways: redesigning study demands, embedding resilience development within curricula, building connected support ecosystems, integrating career readiness with well-being, and establishing data-informed whole-institution governance. The central contribution is a shift from resilience as individual endurance toward resilience as a shared educational capability produced through the interaction of student agency and institutional design.
